Seating plan

A wedding seating plan that keeps families together

In Bridely you set up your tables, then drag guests or whole families onto seats, or let Auto Arrange make a first version that keeps households together and never puts more people at a table than it has seats. Both are free. When a guest says they can't come, their seat frees up on its own. Below you'll also find practical advice on where to seat parents, godparents, families with children and older guests.

How it works in Bridely

  1. Set up your tables

Choose how many tables you have and how many seats each one has, up to 50 tables and up to 10 seats per table. Name them however you like, such as Bride's family, Colleagues or Godparents.

  2. Start with Auto Arrange

Bridely seats the guests who are coming or haven't replied yet, keeps households together and never goes over a table's seats. Everything else follows the order of priorities you choose.

  3. Adjust by hand

Drag a guest or a whole household onto a seat. On a phone, tap the guest, then tap a free seat. Move or swap people whenever plans change.

  4. Check the room

Switch from the table view to the room layout. Filters and search quickly show who still needs a seat.

  5. Send it to the venue

With the Wedding Pass, download the room layout and a table list with every guest's menu and allergies as PDFs.

Where to start: the tables closest to you

Start with the people closest to you. At Romanian weddings the godparents usually sit right by the couple, at the head table or at the table nearest to it. Both sets of parents sit close too, often each family at its own table, so they can look after their own guests. In Bridely the head table appears on the plan as a marker and has no seats, so make a regular table for your godparents and name it after them.

Then come grandparents and older relatives. Seat them away from the speakers, near the exit and the toilets, with an easy path to their chair. They stay longer when they can hear each other.

Families with children and the younger crowd

Children sit with their parents. A kids' table on the far side of the room with no adults is rarely a good idea. Put families with small children near an exit or in a quieter corner, so a parent can step out without crossing the dance floor. If you have a nanny or a play corner, the tables next to it work best.

Younger guests want to be near the dance floor and the DJ. Seat them in their own circles, from university, work or school. People who know each other get up to dance sooner. Anyone coming alone should have at least one familiar face at the table. Auto Arrange keeps children with their parents and seats solo guests with others from the same group.

Rules that spare you awkward moments

The seating plan keeps changing until the last week. When someone says they can't come, their seat is freed. Choose Arrange unseated guests and the new arrivals find a table, while everyone already seated stays where you put them.

  • Divorced parents or relatives who don't get on sit at different tables, both of them good ones
  • Keep one or two seats free for anyone who turns up at the last minute
  • Colleagues usually do best at a table of their own
  • Make sure godparents and parents can see the couple and the first dance
  • Finish the plan once the reply deadline has passed

How Auto Arrange decides

Auto Arrange follows a few simple rules and doesn't use artificial intelligence. The same guest list and the same tables always give the same result. It never splits a household, never seats more people at a table than it has seats, and leaves out guests who have declined. After that it weighs, in the order you choose, the guest's group, their family name, whose guest they are, solo guests and keeping tables well filled. Drag the priorities to reorder them, and Bridely keeps your order for your wedding.

Questions couples ask

Is Auto Arrange free?

Yes. Auto Arrange and moving or swapping guests are all free. Only the PDF downloads of the room layout and the table list need the Wedding Pass, or a wedding run by a planner on Solo, Pro or Studio.

How many tables and seats can I set up?

Up to 50 tables, with up to 10 seats at each. You can change this at any time. A table or seat with someone sitting there won't be removed, so move that guest first.

Will Auto Arrange split up a family?

No. A guest with their partner and children is seated together at one table. If no table has enough free seats for the whole family, Bridely leaves them unseated for now and tells you, so you can decide.

What happens to my plan when someone declines?

Their seat is freed automatically, whether they answer through the invitation or you record the reply yourself. The rest of the plan stays as it was.

Can I do the seating plan on my phone?

Yes. Tap a guest, then tap a free seat, or drag them straight onto it. On a phone, the list of guests still to seat slides up from the bottom of the screen.

Where should the godparents sit?

Traditionally close to the couple, at the head table or the nearest table, with their partners. In Bridely, create a table, name it after your godparents and seat them there. The head table on the plan is only a marker and has no seats.

Can I send the seating plan to the venue?

Yes, with the Wedding Pass. Download the table list as a PDF with each guest's menu and allergies, and the room layout. Weddings run by a planner on Solo, Pro or Studio can download both too.
